Taking It to the Streets

Takin’ it to the Streets was established over nine years ago as part of the ministry of LAVIM to gather large groups of volunteers for an intense mission of public service in a one-weekend event. In recent years, this ministry has focused on the building of handicap ramps in various communities. In response to hurricanes Rita and Katrina, the Louisiana Conference formed Louisiana Disaster Recovery Ministry to serve the needs of those impacted by those hurricanes which brought devastation throughout the southern portion of our state. Joining hands in this continuing recovery and rebuilding process, Disaster Recovery and LAVIM  have announced three Takin’ it to the Streets events in 2007.  While building ramps   for the disabled may be assigned to some teams, the events will largely center on the “mucking out” or repair of storm damaged homes in the Abbeville area, Lake Charles and New Orleans.

LOCAL VIDEO MISSIONS

We have “worked the bugs out” of the recording of Sunday Services and the production of DVD’s for use in visiting shut-ins, sharing the service with relatives and friends who are away, and for self review by the choir, speakers, and others.  The missions use that can be made of such a medium is certainly beyond what we already imagine.

We now need volunteers to be trained to video record the Sunday morning worship services. Previous photography or video experience is neither a requirement nor a disqualification. This involves the operation of the camera, the recorder, and the sound feed to the recorder in a clearly marked setup procedure. The one-on-one training will spread over three Sundays (they do not need to be three Sundays in a row, but should be as close together as possible).

Sunday 1 – the trainee will watch the instructor through the process and receive explanations of what is being done.

Sunday 2 – The trainee will be “hands-on” and operate the equipment while being closely instructed.

Sunday 3 – The trainee will perform the whole process of the recording of the service while the instructor observes. After this the trainee should feel, and be, competent to setup the equipment and record Sunday Worship Services again in the future.

We plan to have a good number of people qualified to handle the equipment and make the recordings so that it will not be necessary for any one person to do it more often than they are reasonably able. Any who would like to become prepared to contribute this service in our church should click here to send an email to Kirby Larpenter.

Wesley Foundation - Archie Gentry extends big thank you for supporting the recent fundraiser of the sale of Easter crosses. Our congregation purchased approximately 20 crosses, plus donated generously above the cost of the cross. While in a generous mood and spring is here for cleaning out closets, set aside unused items for their May 5th yard sale. Small items may be left at our church and large items can be picked up by calling Archie/Don Gentry-419-2533

In July a group from the Wesley Center will make a mission trip to New Mexico to work with Native Americans on their reservation. Donations toward this ministry will gladly be accepted.

The Center is still looking for groups to prepare and serve lunch on Wednesday. If you are your group would like to become more involved with this ministry to the students at SLU please Contact Don/Archie at 419-2533
